Summary

This article demonstrates the steps required to install Power Tab Editor software on a machine running the Windows operating system.

More Information

Installing Power Tab Editor software involves three primary steps: downloading the .zip file, extracting the contents of the .zip file, and running the setup program.

Step 1 - Downloading the .zip File

Power Tab Editor software is stored in a single, compressed file (.zip file) at two offsite locations:

  • Cnet Download, a site that archives a wide range of freeware and shareware software.
  • Harmony Central, a site that archives music-oriented software.

Downloading from Cnet Download

To download the .zip file from Cnet Download, proceed as follows:

  1. Using your Web browser, connect to the Download Center.
  2. Click the Download.com link (button) under the Power Tab Editor download section. This will redirect you to the Power Tab Editor download page on the Cnet Download site.
  3. Click the Download Now link on the page.
  4. When queried by your Web browser, save the POWERTAB.ZIP file to a folder on your computer. The desktop is as good a place as any.
  5. Proceed to step 2.

Downloading from Harmony Central

To download the .zip file from Harmony Central, proceed as follows:

  1. Using your Web browser, connect to the Download Center.
  2. Click the Harmony Central link under the Power Tab Editor download section. This will redirect you to the Power Tab Editor download page on the Harmony Central site.
  3. Click the Download Software link on the page.
  4. When queried by your Web browser, save the POWERTAB.ZIP file to a folder on your computer. The desktop is as good a place as any.
  5. Proceed to step 2.

Step 2 - Extracting the Contents of the .zip File

Now that you've got the .zip file on your computer, you need to extract it's contents. In order to extract the contents of a .zip file, you need to use file compression software. If you're using Windows XP, you're in luck - it comes with built-in .zip file support. If you're not using Windows XP, you'll need to download a 3rd party file compression tool.

Uncompressing the Software Using Windows XP's Built-In File Compression Support

If you're using Windows XP, and have the .zip file support installed, you can extract the contents of the .zip file as follows:

  1. Right-click (click using the right mouse button) on the POWERTAB.ZIP file.
  2. On the popup menu, click Extract All
  3. Follow the instructions in the Extraction Wizard.
  4. Proceed to step 3.

Uncompressing the Software Using 3rd Party Software

If you're not using Windows XP, or require a file compression utility to extract the .zip file, the recommended software to use is 7-Zip. 7-Zip is a freeware compression tool that supports a large number of compression formats, including the .zip format. To download 7-Zip, proceed as follows:

  1. Using your Web browser, connect to http://www.7-zip.org/.
  2. Download the latest version of the 7-Zip software available on the download page. (32-bit .exe is recommended - once again, you can save it to the desktop)
  3. Double-click on the file downloaded in previous step, and then follow the instructions in the 7-Zip setup program.
  4. After you have successfully installed 7-Zip, right-click (click using the right mouse button) on the Power Tab Editor .zip file.
  5. On the popup menu, point to 7-Zip, and then click Extract files
  6. In the Extract to box, enter the folder where you wish the files to be extracted to, and then click OK.
  7. Proceed to step 3.

Step 3 - Running the Setup Program

Now that you've extracted the contents of the .zip file, all you have to do is run the setup program to complete the installation process. To run the setup program, proceed as follows:

  1. Browse to the folder where you extracted the contents of the POWERTAB.ZIP file.
  2. Click the setup.exe file.
  3. Follow the instructions in the Power Tab Editor setup program.
Note: From time to time, users report errors when trying to extract the contents of the .zip file, or when trying to run the setup.exe file. These errors are usually the result of a corrupt download. If you experience this type of error, try downloading the .zip file again. (preferably from a different location) These errors may also be caused by download managers. If you use one, try disabling it.
