Symptoms

After installing Power Tab Editor, music notes and symbols do not appear correctly. In their place, characters of another font appear.

Cause

The Power Tab font was not installed properly by the older version of the Power Tab setup program. You should not have this problem with the newer version.

More Information

Like most music programs, Power Tab Editor uses a true type font to render its music symbols. Since the setup program did not install the Power Tab font properly, Windows looks for a substitution font to use in it's place. Most of the time this will be a standard font, like Times New Roman. The letters of this substitution font is what you are seeing in place of the music notes.

Resolution

Uninstall Power Tab Editor and then download and install the Harmony Central setup package from the Download Center. This package uses a different installer which you shouldn't experience the font problem with.

You can try and get the existing installation to work. Sometimes simply opening the font can remedy the problem. To open the font, proceed as follows:

  1. Open up the Fonts folder on your computer, using either Windows Explorer, or by using the Fonts icon in the Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the font called PowerTab (filename = powertab.ttf), and then click Done.
  3. Reboot your computer.
  4. Open Power Tab Editor.

If the above did not solve the problem, delete the font and install the online copy, as follows:

  1. Open up the Fonts folder on your computer, using either Windows Explorer, or by using the Fonts icon in the Control Panel. Delete the font called PowerTab. (filename = powertab.ttf)
  2. Download the online copy of the Power Tab font from the downloads area of the Power Tab .net Web site.
  3. Install the font using the article in Related Links.
